According to a report from Forbes, Taylor Swift is currently the highest-earning celebrity this year. Taylor took the number one spot, earning $185 million from June of 2018 until June of 2019. Taylor managed to beat stiff competition, including Kylie Jenner.
Furthermore, Taylor is also the highest-earning woman in music as well. Taylor earned $185 million which exceeded Beyonce’s $81 million. Beyonce is followed by Rihanna who earned $62 million. Among the others in the list were Katy Perry and Pink, who both took home $57.5 million and $57 million respectively.
The 29-year-old singer/songwriter just finished her performance of two Lover songs at the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night. With that said, however, it was Swift’s last record which earned her so much money. Taylor released Reputation and went on tour in 2018 which went on to become the highest-grossing tour ever, taking in approximately $266,000,000.
Interestingly, actresses didn’t make as much, including Scarlett Johansson, who made $56 million. Sofia Vergara was just behind the Avengers star with around $44 million and then there was Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and Nicole Kidman.
Despite her massive success in the last few years, Taylor hasn’t been without controversy. In fact, in June of this year, it was reported that Scooter Braun had bought out Big Machine Records, Taylor Swift’s former record label, for which she was signed for her first six records.
In other words, for the purchase of $300,000,000, Scooter Braun took home the rights to Taylor Swift’s master recordings. In recent interviews, Taylor claims she intended on recording some of her first albums as a way of combatting this.
However, previously, a source who spoke with Page Six claimed Taylor doesn’t actually own the rights to her first 6 albums, so she doesn’t have the legal right to do so.
The music industry legal expert added that if she wanted to re-record the songs, she would have to change the lyrics, which would render the songs useless, unfortunately, because it’s improbable her fan base would want old songs with new words.
